I have always felt a great passion for helping others. Knowing I have been able to make a positive difference in the lives of others is what gives me the drive to provide my patients with the best care possible.
I have been working as a Clinical Pharmacist in a predominately South Asian community for a number of years. Carrying out Diabetic consultations in this patient group I realised many of these patients did not actually understand their condition and as time went on these patients were prescribed more and more medication and still, no real improvement was seen in their glucose levels. What they failed to link together was the effect their lifestyle was having on their Diabetes.
Their lack of understanding led me to research information in South Asian languages, this is when I found there was limited information available in these languages. They are often provided leaflets in English or referred to Diabetes educational courses hosted in English. They fail to understand the information provided as it is provided in western terms, reflecting western diets, in addition, the uptake of the courses is poor due to the language barrier.
To help this community understand Diabetes better I held a number of health campaigns at the local temple. Then as the pandemic hit, I created educational videos in Punjabi and later went on to develop Desi Diabetes.
I want to give something back to the community that has given me so much and made me the person I am today. Desi Diabetes has been created to help reduce health inequalities in the South Asian communities, how can we expect a patient to control their condition when they don’t understand it? My aim is to empower the South Asian community with enough information to allow them to take control of their condition themselves. When it comes to an initial diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, I am a firm believer in what caused it could cure it.
Please come along this journey with me to help improve the health and wellbeing of our community, our loved ones, and our future generations
